Christians, why would God make hell if he loves us so much?

And please don't just say he made hell for the devil and his angels to begin with. That still doesn't excuse him sending puny humans there. I mean, why would he create such a horrible place of eternal burning for people? If you love someone you wouldn't roast them in hellfire for trillions of years as a punishment for disobedience and never leave them alone.
