Organic chemistry book: "Structure of Ethanol" question?

The point is that carbon atoms in organic compounds share pairs of electrons with the atoms to which they are bound. Each carbon shares four of its electrons, and the atoms bound to it share a total of four electrons as well. Thus, the carbon shares eight electrons with the hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
