How is the US better than a communist government if we ignore the majority opinion on immigration?

The majority of Americans have said they are against illegal immigration yet we are told our views do not matter. We are told by the President of Mexico we are racist and our own President is lax on immigration and has chastised us. If the majority view is not important in America are we not better than a communist dictatorship?
