The legalities of ASCII art generators?

This is a hypothetical question primarily, but...if I take a copyrighted image and feed it into an ascii art generator, is it then my work or the owner of the original copyright's? Rather like painting a picture of a billboard, I suppose...I guess it falls into the Derivative Works thing, and I don't know where that stands right now.
