My wonderful male canary has escaped. What might happen to him?

I feel sad writing this. Yesterday I'd put out my male and female canaries on the terrace to get the morning sun (something they've always loved). However a resounding crash proved disasterous in that the wind had toppled the cage. Fortunately they were unharmed although the base of the cage had been shattered. On trying to move it indoors they both escaped. Fortunately the female was retrieved but sadly not the male. We heard his song and hunted endlessly for him last night and again today. He is green, so could be mistaken for a finch. Can anyone tell me what might have been his fate. Is it remotely possible he might either return/or be attacked by wild birds? I would be greateful for any info on this. Thank you.
