Want to scotch guard my cars upholstery?

Okay , I have recently purchased a car with all black cloth interior and have 2 small children. So I wanted to scotchguard it and my husband came home with heavy starch and he seems to think it is the same thing a s scotchguard. Has anyone ever done this, or does anyone have any ideas for stain repelling my all black cloth interior? Any advice appreciated.
